"Pawns On Black Squares" is the title of the newest novel by Olivera Nikolova published by Matica Makedonska.

Nikolova is one of the leading novelists in the contemporary Macedonian literature, author of a rich opus of prose works. "She views historical, national and social turbulences from a specific angle. As a skilled prose master she writes about the social stratification during the years while institutions are being transformed and through the plot of life stories numerous human destinies are being exposed. The book of novels "The Velvet Shroud" was published in Bulgarian by the publisher Izida from Sofia, translated by the well-known connoisseur and interpreter of Macedonian literature, Marijan Petrov. The release of "The Velvet Shroud" was widely covered by the Bulgarian media and the author was called "the First Lady of the Macedonian literature".
